Obuasi Senior High Technical School has won the maiden edition of the Sci-Tech Innovation Challenge. Over the course of two days, exhibitors from across Ghana displayed their innovative science and technology for the general public.The 2021 edition of the Sci-Tech Fair took place at the Academic City University College campus in Haatso.
The Sci-Tech Fair is a platform that provides an opportunity for students, both in the basic and second-cycle institutions, as well as Tech Start-ups, to apply their creativity, knowledge and understanding of concepts studied in the classroom in producing solutions that could help solve problems in Ghana.
The Fair started off in 2017 as an exhibition-only event, where over a hundred students and Tech Start-ups in Ghana have had the opportunity to display their ingenious innovations.
The 2021 edition of the Sci-Tech Fair is seeing a new addition the Sci-Tech Innovation Challenge to make the two-day event more challenging and give the students extra mileage to explore their creativity and challenge themselves in the practical aspect of science and technology.
Below are the schools and what they presented at the contest:
Louis Rutten SHS CPA COVID Protocols Assistant
Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS) Smart Sanitizing Station
St. Thomas Aquinas SHS Cashbot automated money exchange system
Sekyedumase SHS Temperature Sensor / Automated Door
Obuasi SHTS Automated Sanitizing Station
Mfantsipim School – COVINFO E-learning platform
Obuasi SHTS who was the overall winner received a cash reward of GH20,000 for the team and GH10,000 in science equipment for the school.
Aggrey Memorial SHS also earned a cash prize of GH₵17,000 to the team, and GH₵8,000 worth of science equipment to the school, for placing second in the maiden edition of the Sci-Tech Innovation Challenge.
For Prempeh College, for coming as 2nd Runners-up, the team walked away with a cash prize of GH₵15,000 to the team, and GH₵5,000 worth of science equipment to the school.
As a consolation prize, the remaining seven schools each received GH₵5,000 with GH₵4,000 of it going to the team, and GH₵1,000 worth of science equipment to the school.
